We feel blue, turn green with envy, and see red when we're mad. Colors can conjure up feelings of romance, patriotism, birth, and death. We gauge one another's personalities by asking "what is your favorite color?" Psychologists suggest color can influence our appetites, our moods, and our attention span. It's no wonder then that color plays such an important role in textile manufacturing. In garment manufacturing color may rank even higher in importance than style and fit when it comes to sales. Consider the discount racks at retail stores; they are often filled with garments in the colors that didn't sell, regardless of fit and style. Because of this, designers choose their colors carefully, based on current trends and market research. Once the designers have chosen their color palette, they demand accuracy and consistency from their dye mills. HOW IS COLOR COMMUNICATED? The key to providing accurate and consistent color is good color communication. But how exactly is color communicated? It's not easy. There are many variables that affect the perception of the color of a fabric including lighting, texture, fiber, chemical finishes, and background. Companies that specialize in color communication have developed highly sophisticated methods of viewing and measuring color to combat these problems. These companies are constantly improving upon existing products and methods and devising new and innovative products and methods to improve the color communication chain with faster, more accurate color assessment and communication.
