Unlocking the secrets to cutting edge color communication

COLOR VIEWING

When viewing color samples, it is important that the best possible conditions are used. Companies such as GTI Graphic Technology Inc. have created color viewing booths with controlled light sources including simulated daylight sources and conventional commercial fluorescent sources. Having a consistent, controlled light source allows for more accurate color matching. Also, the varied light sources can simulate conditions under which the textile will be seen or used. The color may appear differently in daylight than it does under fluorescent lights used in a retail shop or showroom. Color viewing booths can eliminate problems caused by these variations before the products hit the market. According to the com­pany, they help eliminate one of the biggest variables in visual color as­sessment, using the correct light source.

According to the company, GTI's color viewing booths use state of the art lighting technology that requires less maintenance and draws less elec­trical power than others on the mar­ket. The booths meet ASTM D1729-96 specifications for critical color matching and have a high CIE Publi­cation 51 rating for simulated daylight sources (D65, D50, D75). GTI's light booths meet the apparatus require­ments of AATCC Evaluation Proce­dure 9 section 5, Visual Assessment of Color Differences of Textiles. They also offer multiple angle viewing tables as specified in the procedure.

COLOR MEASURING

Visually assessing and matching color is only one part of the equation. All people view color differently. Stress, emotion, fatigue, and illness can all affect the way an individual sees color. Years ago, color communication companies developed colorimeters and spectrophotometers as a mechani­cal means of objectively measuring color. Spectrophotometers have come a long way in the last several years with companies continually redeveloping and fine-tuning their products.
