The original MS-DOS-based software had successfully managed Holmfirth's operation for the previous 14 years but a decision to upgrade the system was taken shortly after a new inspection and cutting machine was purchased, as it was a logical next step to link this equipment to an updated TMS system to minimise user input. The new Windows-based software, named Progress, manages the receipt of grey pieces, the allocation of grey pieces to orders, receipt of finished pieces from work, despatch and invoice. The upgrade was an opportunity for Holmfirth not only to replicate the functions of the old system but also to improve the flow of work through the factory and increase ease of use for the operators with a more intuitive and graphical interface. Progress has been developed in Delphi with an SQL Server database for improved data stability and speed of access. The data from the old system was converted into the new one and the installation was completed within a day.
